The tradition, at least in my unit, was that a Marine would make a parachute cord bracelet for himself or his friends upon deployment to the Middle East.
Each bracelet is made from a single cord and braided by me. Not only are they actually green (in color), they are also green in other ways. When you are in need of a rope, the bracelet can be unbraided and used as a rope. The parachute cord can then be reused once more as a bracelet by braiding it.
